<edit: This post has been completely re-written to include all the information you need to know for the R3 to R4 upgrade>

Help Topics for the R3 to R4 Upgrade are Live!

As you've heard, in the fourth quarter 2009, the Microsoft Exchange data center will upgrade servers to the latest software and start to upgrade customer domains from the R3 version to the latest version (R4). After your upgrade has started, the mailboxes in your domain will start to move to the latest version. It doesn't happen all at once, so for a while, some of your users may have R3 mailboxes and others will have R4 mailboxes. We call this state "coexistence."

When the upgrade is complete, you and your users will all get some new features, and some functionality will change for the features that you already have.

Check out the latest help at Heads-Up: Managing Your Domain During the R3 to R4 Upgrade.

Here's a quick look at what you should keep an eye on during the upgrade.

How do I know we've been upgraded to R4?

·         Sign in to Outlook Web App and check the color scheme. It's blue in R3 and yellow in R4. The first administrator account (the one created during enrollment) is always upgraded first. After that, end users can verify their upgrade by the change to yellow in Outlook Web App. Administrators currently can't track what percentage of their users have been upgraded, but users can easily tell by the change in color.

·         Sign in to http://outlook.com/ecp. Do you see the new Administrator Roles tab? If so, you're on R4! Learn more about the new management functionality at What's New for Organizations.

What do I have to do during the upgrade?

You have to update some of the tools you use to manage Outlook Live. All domains have to update the version of Windows PowerShell that they're using, and schools that automate account management have to upgrade the Exchange Labs Management Agent (ELMA).

After you've verified that your upgrade is under way, perform the following required steps:

·         Download Windows PowerShell v2 and start to use it to manage your domain. The Windows Management Framework contains the correct versions of Windows PowerShell v2 and WinRM 2.0. Although an immediate switch to this version isn't required, Windows PowerShell v2 provides the following advantages:

·         During coexistence, you can use it to manage all mailboxes. It doesn't matter whether the mailbox is running R3 or R4.

·         New mailboxes created by using Windows PowerShell v2 are created as version R4. If you use earlier versions of Windows PowerShell after the upgrade for your organization is initiated, they'll be R3 mailboxes and will be added to the queue for pending mailbox upgrades.

You have to upgrade your version of Windows PowerShell before the end of January 2010. After January 2010, older versions will be blocked from connecting. For more information, see Install and Configure Windows PowerShell.

Thanks!

For one thing, OWA will look a little different(ex: You'll be able to turn on the reading pane). The Options pages will also look different.  You can also look at information in powershell to tell, but OWA/Options pages are the easiest way to tell.

Hello,

I have some questions of OL working with ILM:

1. What is the difference between OLMA and OLSync MA. I have installed Dirsync.msi that should be GALSync MA but the name of the MA is Exchange Labs (ELMA). You are mentioning both and I thought that is the same MA using R3?

2. Using OLSync MA or OLMA will give the possibility to install SP2 on Windows Server 2008 (because right now only SP1 is supported because of WinRM)?

3. Using OLSync MA or OLMA will give the possibility to work with Windows Server 2008 x64 (right now only x86 is supported for ILM 2007 FP1)?

4. Is ForeFront Identity Manager 2010 will support OLSync MA or OLMA?

Thank you.

1. The name of GALSync is going to change in R4. Here's how the naming will change:

R3 Terms:

The solution: GALSync 2010

The managment agent: Exchange Live Managment Agent (ELMA).

The setup package: Dirsync.msi

R4 Terms for the same components:

The solution: Outlook Live Directory Sync (OLSync).

The managment agent: Outlook LIve Management Agent (OLMA).

The setup package:  Galsync.msi (yes, slightly confusing)

2. R4 OLSync solution will support Windows 2008 SP2.

3. R4 OLSync solution will only run on 32bit Server.

4. R4 OLsync solution will only run on Identity Lifecycle Management Server 2007, Feature Pack 1 (FP1)

Whenever someone gets the new edition, please leave some feedback and possibly some screenshots too... that would be excellent

This is hard to follow.  "2010" is now outdated even though we're still in 2009.  The new olsync is in a file called dirsync.msi?  which is downloaded from the galsync hyperlink on the connect site!!!!  Are you kidding?  I need to see an official document of what files need to be upgraded and the proper order of all this.  Comprehensive guidance with links and all...

Where do we get the downloads for the new Powershell and Olsync?  It seems the connect site only has "r3" milestone.

I believe that my domain has just been updated to R4, and I am not sure that it is as user friendly as R3. Are all of the settings still available under R4? If so, I am having a hard time manipulating the settings.

I haven't seen an answer to Mike Crowley's question about files that need to be upgraded.

We just finished upgrading to V3 of ELMA. When we upgraded, we were told that ELMA was now called Hosted. Am I correct in presuming that Hosted is ELMA v3?

Like Mike Crowley, I need to know what is upgraded. Our MA is tailored for our site.

1. Updated upgrade, install, and OLSync parameter documentation will be updated at this link in the next couple days: help.outlook.com/.../dd490636.aspx

2. R4 OLSync bits will available for download on the MSConnect site in the next couple days. You can continue to use R3 admin tools and ELMA R3 while your domain is upgraded however you cannot run R4 OLSync bits unless your organization has started the R4 upgrade

3. You will know your domain has started upgrade to R4 by logging on to OWA with your admin account and you will see a few new options such as ability to turn off the reading pane

4. Upgrades start in November

5. The "Hosted" MA that shows up in GALsync 2010 is ELMA. It also shows up in the R4 version of OLSync, where ELMA is renamed OLMA.

The latest version of powershell I can find is V2 CTP3 (as of this message). Will this version work with R4?

Hello I have been trying to install powershell v.2 on the school server but I cannot find the installer, the only thing that I found is an update on this website: support.microsoft.com/.../968929

I have a powershell V2 CTP 3 installer but is from march 2009, is that OK  to create R4 mailboxes? I wanted to install  Windows Management Framework Core but the only file that downloads is (WinRMWindows6.0-KB950099-x86.msu) which is an update. Can anybody help me solve this issue?

@emanuele - CTP3 will only provision R3 accounts. Once you have been upgraded to R4, then switch over to the new PowerShell (help.outlook.com/.../cc952756.aspx‎) and you'll be able to provision R4 accounts.
